Coimbatore also known as KOVAI is the third largest city in Tamilnadu, with a population of more than 15 lakhs. The city is one of the largest exporters of Textiles, Jewellery, Wet Grinders, Poultry, Machineries, Pumps and Auto Components. Coimbatore has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission. Coimbatore was rated as one of the safest cities in India for women according to National Crime Records Bureau report in 2015. Coimbatore is also known as Koyamuthur and kovai, is a major city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is situated in the banks of the Noyyal River and surrounded by the Western Ghats. The Coimbatore is the Second Largest City in Tamil Nadu after Chennai. This City is commonly called as the Manchester of South India. This city is one of the largest Exporters of Jewellery, wet grinders, poultry and automobile components. City is also having world class Medical facilities with around 750 hospitals in the city with an in-patient capacity of 5000 Beds, like Ganga Hospital, CMC, KMCH, KG, Ramakrishna, PSG, GEM, Royal care etc are the major Hospitals in the city. The district is home to 7 universities, 78 engineering colleges, 3 medical colleges, 2 dental colleges, 35 polytechnics and 150 arts and science colleges. Main educational institutions are GCT, PSG, CIT, KCE, KCT, TNAU, SKCT, Government Law College, Amritha University, Bharathiyar University and other Private Colleges. The city houses Government research institutes including the Central Institute for Cotton Research, Sugarcane Breeding Research Institute, Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB) and Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education.

The Coimbatore “wet grinders” and “Coimbatore Cora Cotton” are recognized as the Geographical Indications by the Government of India. Coimbatore is the part of Kongu Nadu during the Sangam period between 1st and the 4th centuries and was ruled by the Cheras as it served as the eastern entrance to the Palakkad Gap, the principal entrance between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The Coimbatore is considered as the Hub of Tamil Nadu because it had great values in the area of textile, industrial, commercial, educational, information technology and healthcare. Thiru K. Rajamani IAS is the District Collector of the Coimbatore District. The total circumference of the Coimbatore Area is about 4,723 km square meters. The official language of the Coimbatore is Tamil and people who live here speak in Tamil. The city has four special economic zones [SEZ], ELCOT SEZ, CHIL SEZ, SPAN Venture SEZ, Aspen SEZ and at least five more SEZs are in the pipeline. In 2010, Coimbatore ranked 15th in the list of most competitive (by business environment) Indian cities. National Textile Corporation is a company owned by the Indian government has 5 Mill units in Coimbatore.

Coimbatore has a large and a diversified manufacturing sector facilitated by the presence of Larsen & Toubro, Baker Hughes, Alstom, ZF Friedrichshafen, Konecranes, Pricol, Lakshmi Machine Works, V-Guard Industries, Suzlon, ARGO-HYTOS, Titan, Flowserve, KSB, Makino, Messer, Gilbarco Veeder-Root, Rieter, VWR International, Hella, Shanthi Gears, ITC Limited, ACC Cements, TTK Prestige, Hirotec, Roots Industries, Salzer Electronics, ELGI Equipments, Texmo Industries, SE Electricals, ... Etc. Larsen & Toubro has huge manufacturing facility spread over 300 acre own campus. The large number of engineering colleges in this region producing lot of engineers. Indian Railways has "Southern Railway Signal & Telecom Workshop" in Podanur which is a manufacturing unit for Electrical & Communication division of Indian Railways.
